What is an Automated Singing Bowl and How Does It Work?

For thousands of years, sound healers and musicians have played crystal singing bowls the same way — using a mallet to strike or circle the rim, coaxing out the bowl's resonant tones by hand. It's a beautiful, meditative practice. But for professional practitioners managing multiple bowls during a sound bath, it also has real limitations: you can only be in one place at a time, you can only hold a mallet in each hand, and maintaining a continuous drone note means constant physical attention. That's where the automated singing bowl changes everything.
What is an Automated Singing Bowl?
An automated singing bowl is a traditional singing bowl enhanced with technology that allows it to vibrate and sing without a mallet. Instead of physical contact, a small electromagnetic exciter — a vibrating device glued inside the bowl — causes the bowl to resonate electronically at its natural frequency. The result is the same pure, rich tone you know and love, produced continuously, hands-free, and under precise control.

How Does Automated Singing Bowl Technology Work?
The Musical Mushroom® is the world's first patent-pending automated singing bowl controller. Here's how it works:
The Exciter - A small plastic mounting disc is glued to the inside surface of your bowl. A compact electromagnetic exciter screws onto this disc and connects via a short cable to the Musical Mushroom control unit, which sits in the center of the bowl. The exciter creates mechanical vibrations that cause the bowl itself to sing — no mallet required.
Hand Gesture Control - An eye-safe laser sensor built into the Musical Mushroom detects the presence and position of your hand hovering above the bowl. The closer your hand, the louder the tone. Moving your hand up and down creates a natural tremolo effect — fluid, expressive, and completely intuitive.
Automatic Drone Mode - One of the most powerful features of an automated singing bowl is the ability to generate a continuous drone note without any ongoing input. The Musical Mushroom detects your hand gesture pattern and, when your hand is removed, continues playing that pattern automatically. To stop the bowl, simply wave your hand quickly over it. This frees you to move to other instruments, walk among your audience, or focus your attention elsewhere — all while your bowl keeps singing.
LED Lighting Effects - The Musical Mushroom also features programmable LED lighting inside the bowl, including a candle flicker effect and customizable colors, turning your singing bowl into a captivating audio-visual centrepiece.

MIDI and Wireless Control
For advanced practitioners and performers, the Musical Mushroom also supports MIDI control via USB, allowing integration with digital audio workstations (DAWs) and electronic music setups. Multiple units can be wirelessly networked together and controlled from a single central location using the Musical Mushroom Whisperer — a wireless remote that can manage up to 8 bowls simultaneously.
This means you can place bowls throughout a room, surround your audience with sound, and control the entire setup from one spot — something simply not possible with traditional mallets.
Who is an Automated Singing Bowl For?
Automated singing bowl technology is a game-changer for:
Sound bath practitioners who want to maintain drone notes in background bowls while playing other instruments.
Sound healers running one-on-one sessions who want to place bowls beneath a massage table for somatic vibration.
Performing musicians who want to incorporate crystal bowls into electronic or multi-instrument performances.
Yoga and meditation teachers who want a richer, more immersive soundscape without needing a second pair of hands.
Anyone curious about bringing ancient sound healing into the digital age.
Is Installation Complicated?
Not at all. Installation takes just a few minutes:
Glue the small mounting disc inside your bowl (it can be left permanently or removed later — it won't affect manual playing).
Screw the exciter onto the disc.
Connect the cable to your Musical Mushroom unit.
Perform a one-time calibration so the unit learns your bowl's resonant frequency.
You're ready to play!
The Musical Mushroom remembers its calibration, so each time you use the same unit in the same bowl, it's ready to go instantly.
Do I Need One Per Bowl?
Not necessarily. Many practitioners use just two or three Musical Mushrooms to hold drone notes in their larger bowls in the background while continuing to play smaller bowls manually. Others prefer full automation across their entire bowl set. It's entirely a matter of personal preference and performance style. One thing to keep in mind: when installing Musical Mushrooms in multiple bowls, space your bowls approximately one bowl-width apart so the hand gesture sensors don't interfere with each other.
