Musical Mushrooms

Meet the Musical Mushroom®, a revolutionary new technology enabling you to play an age old instrument in a completely new way.

Sound like you have a second practitioner playing beside you!

Throw away your mallets!  You don't need them anymore with the new patent-pending Musical Mushroom® technology!  Designed to be easily installed in your existing crystal singing bowls, they enable you to play using simple hand gestures.  Lower your hand to increase the singing bowl's volume, raise it to decrease.   Move your hand sideways and the Musical Mushroom will automatically hold a fixed or wave-like note for up to a few hours!  No more need to keep rubbing the mallet!  You can just set it and walk away while you play other instruments.  You can layer multiple drone notes in the background to generate beautiful harmonizing chords instead of single notes and take your performances to the next level!  Even give yourself a sound bath at home!  Also supports the MIDI over USB protocol!

Key Features

No More Mallets Required!

Say goodbye to the traditional mallet!  Instead, use simple and intuitive hand gestures to make your crystal singing bowls sing!  You can control the volume with your hand position.

Basic Components

BasicComponents.jpg
  1. Musical Mushroom Unit: this is the rechargeable battery-powered controller placed inside your bowl.  It has a special invisible laser sensor used to detect your hand position as well as LEDs to illuminate your bowl.

  2. Protective Lid: when transporting or stacking your Musical Mushroom, use this lid to protect it.

  3. Exciter: this component generates mechanical vibrations to make your bowl sing when plugged into the Musical Mushroom controller.  It is screwed onto the mounting disc and can be unscrewed for storage.

  4. Exciter Protective Cover: when transporting your exciter, use the protective lid to cover it.

  5. Mounting Disc: this very lightweight plastic threaded disc is glued onto your singing bowl using special double-sided tape.  You can leave it permanently in your bowl and still play your bowl with a mallet.  Its low profile also allows you to still nest your bowls for transport.  It can be removed if desired.

  6. Disc Removal Tool:  this tool is used to remove the mounting disc from your bowl should you choose to do so.

  7. USB Charger & Cable:  this is used to charge your Musical Mushroom.

  8. Reflective Wrist Band:  not usually needed when playing the Musical Mushrooms in a normal seated position.  It is provided just in case you need to play your bowls standing up.  The retroreflective wrist band helps the light sensor detect your hands more easily from a far distance.

Bowl Requirements

Musical Mushroom automated singing bowl controller installed outdoors in 3 crystal bowls being played by a performer.
  • Designed for standard crystal singing bowls (frosted, clear or colored from a variety of vendors usually work fine).

  • NOT designed for metal bowls (tibetan) or gongs.

  • NOT recommended for use on super thin-walled crystal singing bowls such as the Crystal Tones Alchemy series.  The weight of the exciter dampens the vibrations on those bowls.  Also, the higher than usual height of the bowl triggers the laser sensor on the rim (need to elevate the Mushroom).

Installation

  1. Simply peel off the plastic strip from the back of the mounting disc to expose the double-sided tape and glue it inside your bowl.  Follow the user manual for detailed instructions.  The disc can remain in place permanently or can be removed if desired.  Replacement discs can also be purchased.

  2. You can remove the exciter by simply unscrewing it from the mounting disc when finished playing for transport.  Re-install it by screwing it back on.  That's it!

3. Place the Musical Mushroom inside your bowl.  Connect the wire from the exciter and switch ON the unit.  Run a calibration the first time and you are ready to play!

Purchase Advice

Q: Do I need one Musical Mushroom per bowl?

A: You don't necessarily need one Mushroom per bowl.  Some people only need a few Mushrooms to hold drone notes in their larger bowls in the background while they play their other bowls manually at the same time.  Others prefer the ability to play all their bowls using hand gestures so they install one mushroom per bowl.  It is a matter of personal preference.  Just be aware that you should space your bowls about 1 bowl apart when they have mushrooms installed so the hand gesture sensors don't interfere with each other.  You might want to start with a few bowls at first and add more later on.

Q: What is the difference between all your kits?

A: All kits include everything you need to install and use the Musical Mushrooms in your existing singing bowls.  The difference between the kits is the number of Musical Mushrooms included.  The single unit starter kit does NOT come with a custom plastic carrying case to keep its cost low.  All other kits (2, 3 and 4 units) include a free carrying case, which is a recommended accessory if you travel a lot with your Mushrooms.

Q: What should I start with?

A: If you are really unsure and just want to start small, the Single Unit Starter Kit is the lowest cost option.  However, we generally recommend getting a Dual Unit Nomad Kit.  This includes a free high quality custom plastic carrying case which has slots for 4 units in total.  You can always purchase two additional units later to fill in the empty slots.  Two units also allow you to setup in two bowls and create pleasing harmonies with both hands.  If you are a professional, a Quad Unit Professional kit is recommended.
