Why Doesn't My Musical Mushroom Find 432 Hz or 440 Hz?

One of the most common support questions we receive goes something like this:
"My bowl is a 432 Hz bowl, but the Musical Mushroom calibrated it to 513 Hz. Is something wrong?"
Or sometimes:
"I thought my bowl should measure 440 Hz. Why is the Musical Mushroom finding 349 Hz?"
The good news is that nothing is wrong. In fact, if your Musical Mushroom is finding a frequency other than 432 Hz or 440 Hz, it's probably doing exactly what it should. The confusion comes from a very common misunderstanding throughout the sound healing community: people often confuse a tuning reference with a bowl's actual resonant frequency.
Let's clear that up.
Two Different Things: Tuning vs. Resonant Frequency
When a manufacturer says a singing bowl is:
440 Hz tuned, or
432 Hz tuned
they are not saying the bowl vibrates at 440 Hz or 432 Hz. Instead, they are describing the musical tuning system used to calculate the frequencies of every note. Think of it like using Celsius or Fahrenheit. Both describe temperature—they simply use different reference points. Music works the same way.
What Does "440 Hz Tuning" Actually Mean?
In modern music, one specific note is chosen as the reference:
A4 = 440 Hz
Every other musical note is calculated from that single reference. Some sound healing practitioners prefer an alternative tuning where:
A4 = 432 Hz
Again, every other note is calculated from that different reference. Notice something important:
Only one note in the musical scale is actually 440 Hz (or 432 Hz). That note is A4. Every other note has its own frequency. So unless your singing bowl happens to be an A4 bowl, its natural resonant frequency will almost certainly not be 440 Hz or 432 Hz.
What Is the Musical Mushroom Actually Measuring?

As you can see, only A4 equals 440 Hz or 432 Hz. Every other musical note has its own unique frequency. For example, if your bowl is a C4 bowl, you should expect the Musical Mushroom to find approximately:
261.6 Hz if the bowl follows 440 tuning
256.9 Hz if the bowl follows 432 tuning
Both are perfectly normal.
"But My Bowl Is Sold as a 432 Hz Bowl..."
This is where much of the confusion begins. A "432 Hz bowl" doesn't vibrate at 432 Hz. It means the bowl's musical note was determined using the 432 Hz tuning system instead of the 440 Hz tuning system.
For example:
A 432-tuned C4 bowl resonates near 256.9 Hz
A 440-tuned C4 bowl resonates near 261.6 Hz
Neither bowl vibrates at 432 Hz. The difference between the two is only about 1.8%, but enough to slightly change the frequency of every note.

Simply:
Place your phone near the bowl.
Strike the bowl with a mallet or let the Musical Mushroom play it.
Observe the strongest peak shown in the frequency spectrum.
You should see a frequency that closely matches the value found during Musical Mushroom calibration. It's a great way to confirm that both your bowl and your Musical Mushroom are in agreement.
What About All Those Other Peaks?
If you look at a spectrum analyzer, you'll probably notice many peaks—not just one.
That's completely normal. Crystal singing bowls produce a rich series of harmonics (overtones) in addition to their fundamental note. These higher frequencies are what give each bowl its beautiful, complex character. The Musical Mushroom identifies the bowl's primary resonant frequency, because that's the frequency that most efficiently excites the bowl and produces the strongest, cleanest sound.
